the sacred and profane on steroids in varanasi

with 5 comments

Varanasi (also known at various times in its long history (about 6000 years) as Kashi (not the cereal but city of Life) and Benares is the most chaotic, sacred and profane place you can imagine.  The contrast is simply incomprehendible
hindu pilgrims come o the ghats lining the River Ganges to wash away their sins and cremate their dead so their loved ones can reach moksha which gets you out of the otherwise endless cycle of life and death.  The mind numbing flow of holy men, honking motorbikes, cows with big horns and an attitude, rickshaws, and touts makes it a challenge to see but if you get past that there is amazing an amazing scene to see – click on the thumbnails above to see a small sampling of what my eyes have seen in the last two days…..

  2. Hey MArcy,I just found you on aphotofolio cos that’s where I am. Anyway, just looking through your fine works and I noticed you’ve just come back from Varanasi, as have I. Trying to get through all my negatives but slowly posting stuff. Would be good to compare notes!
